The Cell Flashcards
Define Cell
The smallest unit of living matter that is able to live and reproduce
Define Anatomy
Study of structures within the body and their composition
Define Physiology
Study of the functions of the stuructures within the body
Requirement for Cell survival (5)
Oxygen Food Water Waste elimination Ideal Temperature
3 Main structures of Cells
Nucleus
Cytoplasm
Cell Membrane
Organelles of the Cell (9)
vacuole ribosomes lysosomes centrioles (starts cell division) nucleolus mitochondria (cell metabolism) golgi apparatus RER & ER
Phases of cell division
Interphase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase
Define Metabolism
The chemical process of converting nutrients into energy to be used by the cell
Define Mitosis
Cell division where two identical daughter cells are produced
What is the function of the nucleus?
The brain of the cell, contains DNA and controls growth and reproduction
Function of the cell membrane
Encloses all cell contents and is selectively permeable, thus will only let certain things in
Function of the cytoplasm
holds the organelles of the cell
mitochondria function
controls cell metabolism, “powerhouse” of the cell
Name a type of cell that has lots of mitochondria, and 1 that has very little?
Muscle cells have lots because they need lots of energy to function while nerve cells have little
Anabolism vs catabolism
Anabolism is the build up process
Catabolism is the break down process
