Nervous communication Flashcards
What are receptors?
They detect stimuli
What does a baroreceptor detect?
Changes in pressure
What are receptors specific to?
One type of stimuli
What are effectors?
Cells that bring about a response to a stimulus, to produce an effect
What are two types of effectors?
Muscles
Glands
What do muscles do as effectors?
Bring about movement
What do glands do as effectors?
Release hormones
What are the three types of neurones?
Sensory
Relay
Motor
What is the purpose of sensory neurones?
Transmit electrical impulses from receptors to the central nervous system
What is the purpose of relay neurones?
Transmit electrical impulses between sensory and motor neurones
What is the purpose of motor neurones?
Transmit electrical impulses from the CNS to effectors
What is a neurotransmitter?
A chemical that transmits a nerve impulse across a synapse
What is the purpose of a reflex arc?
Rapid involuntary movements to protect your body from harm
What is a synapse?
A gap between two neurones
What is the sequence of events in a reflex arc?
Stimulus Receptors Sensory neurone Relay neurone Motor neurone Effector Response
