What is a gene?
A sequence of bases on a DNA molecule that codes for a protein which results in a characteristic
What is an allele?
Different versions of the same gene
What is a locus?
The fixed position of the allele of each gene
What is a genotype?
An organisms genetic make-up
What is a phenotype?
The physical expression of the genotype and it’s interaction with the environment
What is a dominant allele?
Allele always expressed in the phenotype
What is a recessive allele?
Allele only expressed if there is no dominant allele present
What are co-dominant alleles?
Both alleles expressed in the phenotype, neither are recessive
What is a homozygous individual?
They have two copies of the same allele
What is a heterozygous individual?
They carry two different alleles for the same gene
