Nerves of Gluteal Region and Posterior Thigh Flashcards
What innervates the skin of the gluteal region?
The superficial gluteal nerves; superior, middle, and inferior clunial nerves
What are the deep gluteal nerves?
Superior and inferior gluteal nerves, pudendal nerve, nerve to obterator internus, nerve to quadratus femoris, posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh, sciatic nerve
Which nerve does not emerge inferior to the piriformis?
Superior gluteal nerve
What structures does the pudendal nerve supply?
None in the gluteal region, it exits via the lesser sciatic foramen to supply structures in perineum
Which two nerves make up the sciatic nerve?
Tibial nerve and common fibular nerve
What structures does the sciatic nerve supply?
None in the gluteal region, it innervates the posterior thigh muscles, all leg and foot muscles, and the skin on most of the leg and foot
Where do arteries of the gluteal region arise from?
Internal iliac arteries
What are the major gluteal branches of the internal iliac arteries?
Superior and inferior gluteal arteries and internal pudendal artery
What is the chief artery of the thigh?
Deep artery of the thigh
After birth, where does the posterior compartment of the thigh receive blood?
Inferior gluteal, medial circumflex femoral, and perforating and popliteal arteries
Where do veins of the gluteal region arise from?
Tributaries of the internal iliac vein that drain blood from the gluteal region
What is the origin of the clunial superior nerve?
Posterior rami of L1-L3 nerves
What is the origin of the clunial middle nerve?
Posterior rami of S1-S3 nerves
What is the origin of the clunial inferior nerve?
Posterior cutaneous nerve of thigh
What is the origin of the sciatic nerve?
Sacral plexus (L4-S3)
