Ankle Joint Flashcards
What type of joint is the ankle?
Hinge synovial joint
Why is ankle joint strongest during dorsiflexion?
The anterior, wider part of the trochlea is moved posteriorly, spreading the tibia and fibula slightly apart
Why is ankle joint relatively unstable during plantarflexion?
The trochlea is narrower posteriorly and therefore lies loosely within the malleolar mortise
What supports the joint capsule of the ankle?
Strong collateral ligaments
What does the lateral ligament of the ankle consist of?
Anterior tibofibular ligament, posterior talofibular ligament, and calcaneofibular ligament
What are the four parts of the medial ligament of the ankle?
Tibionavicular, tibiocalcaneal, anterior tibiotalar, posterior tibiotalar
