Anterior Thigh Muscles Flashcards
What muscles make up the anterior thigh?
Pectineus, iliopsoas, sartorius, and quadriceps femoris
What muscles make up the quadriceps femoris?
Rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius, vastus medialis
What nerve generally innervates the anterior thigh muscles?
Femoral nerve
Which muscle is the chief flexor of the hip joint?
Iliopsoas
Which muscle is the greatest extensor of the knee joint?
Quadriceps femoris
What is the origin of the pectineus?
Superior ramis of pubis
Where does the pectineus insert?
Pectineal line of femur, just inferior to lesser trochanter
What is the innervation of the pectineus?
Femoral nerve (L2, L3)
What action does the pectineus perform?
Adducts and flexes hip joint; assits with medial rotaion of the hip
What is the origin of the sartorius?
Anterior superior iliac spine and superior part of notch inferior to it
Where does the sartorius insert?
Superior part of medial surface of tibia
What is the innervation of the sartorius?
Femoral nerve (L2, L3)
What action does the sartorius perform?
Flexes, abducts, and laterally rotates hip joint, flexes knee joint
What is the origin of the psoas major?
Sides of T12-L5 vertebrae and discs between them; transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae
Where does the psoas major insert?
Lesser trochanter of femur
What is the innervation of the psoas major?
Anterior rami of lumbar nerves (L1, L2, L3)
What action does the psoas major perform?
Acts with iliacus to flex and stabilize hip joint; also postural muscle that helps control deviation of trunk and is active during standing
What is the origin of the iliacus?
Iliac crest, iliac fossa, ala of sacrum, and anterior sacro-iliac ligaments
Where does the iliacus insert?
Tendon of psoas major, lesser trochanter, and femur distal to it
What is the innervation of the iliacus?
Femoral nerve (L2, L3)
What action does the iliacus perform?
Acts with psoas major to flex and stabilize hip joint
What is the origin of the rectus femoris?
Anterior inferior iliac spine and ilium superior to acetabulum
Where does the rectus femoris insert?
Quadriceps tendon
What is the innervation of the rectus femoris?
Femoral nerve (L2, L3, L4)
What action does the rectus femoris perform?
Extends knee joint, also stabilizes and helps iliopsoas flex the hip joint
What is the origin of the vastus lateralis?
Greater trochanter and lateral lip of linea aspera
Where does the vastus lateralis insert?
Quadriceps tendon
What is the innervation of the vastus lateralis?
Femoral nerve (L2, L3, L4)
What action does the vastus lateralis perform?
Extends knee joint
What is the origin of the vastus medialis?
Intertrochanteric line and medial lip of linea aspera
Where does the vastus medialis insert?
Quadriceps tendon
What is the innervation of the vastus medialis?
Femoral nerve (L2, L3, L4)
What action does the vastus medialis perform?
Extends knee joint
What is the origin of the vastus intermedius?
Anterior and lateral surfaces of shaft of femur
Where does the vastus intermedius insert?
Quadriceps tendon
What is the innervation of the vastus intermedius?
Femoral nerve (L2, L3, L4)
What action does the vastus intermedius perform?
Extends knee joint
