Nerve Tissue Flashcards
What are nerves
Made up of cells called neurons
What do neurons do
Carry messages in form of electrical signals, from one part of the body to another
These messages are known as nerve impulse
Structure of Neurone - Cell Body
Contains nucleus
Where all materials needed by cell is made
Structure of Neurone - Axon
Conduct electric impulse called ‘action potential’
Structure of Neurone - Nucleus
Controls and regulates activities of cell (e.g growth and metabolism)
Carries genes
Structure of Neurone - Dendrite
Receives chemical signals from axon terminal of other neurons
Structure of Neurone - Schwann Cell
Produces myelin sheath
Structure of Neurone - Node of Ranvier
Gaps in myelin sheath; allows electrical impulses to pick up speed
Structure of Neurone - Myelin Sheath
Electrically insulating layer
Why is there myelinated/ non nerve cells
Most nerve cells are myelinated
Those not are small diameter nerves usually responsible for transmitting pain, such as aches and soreness rather than sharp pain
Also detect temp change
Difference between myelinated/ non nerve cells
Non transmit impulses slower while myelinated very fast
Non doesnt have nodes of ranvier while myelinated does
Non is grey while myelinated white
