Muslces Flashcards
1
Q
What are muscles
A
Soft tissue, which can contract to maintain a position in the body or produce movement
2
Q
Muscle structure
A
Made up of muscle fibres (cells)
These fibres are made up of myofibril
Myofibril thin actin filaments and thick protein myosin filaments
Sacromere are repeated unites of thin actin filaments and thick protein myosin filaments. This is the basic unit for muscle contraction
3
Q
Muscle Contraction
A
When muscle contracts, thin actin filaments moves between thick protein myosin filaments, shortening length of sarcomere and overall muscle
4
Q
Two type of muscle fibres
A
Fast twitch and slow twitch
5
Q
Fast twitch muscles
A
- Rapid intense contractions in short bursts
- Few mitochondria-energy for contraction from anaerobic respiration (needs no oxygen)
- Few capillaries
- Tires easily
- Little stored oxygen and glucose
6
Q
Slow twitch muscles
A
- Slow, sustained contraction for long period of exercise
- Many mitochondria-supplies energy from aerobic respiration (requires oxygen)
- Lots of capillaries
- Does not tire easily
- Large oxygen and glucose stores
