Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
where can you find epithelial tissue
line any surface that is in contact with external environement
line surface of internal organs, such as lung
in lungs there are two types of epithelial tissue:squamous and columnar epithelium
columnar epithelium
find in upper airway (trachea and bronchi) is mainly lined with ciliated columnar
these cells have lots of mitochondria
cilia move mucus away from lungs, preventing an inhaled particles causing infection
goblet cells produce mucus
squamous epithelium
flat and thin egg shaped nuclei
often only one cell thick and very good for surfaces where diffusion occurs as in the lungs
copd
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
more common in smokers then non-smokers because substances in smoke damage lungs
cig smoke cause cilia of columnar epithelium to slow and stop beating then eventually die off, mucus builds up
this clogs airways causing more coughing that ruptures thin alveolar epithelial cells, destroying them. reducing surface area for gas exchange
further provides good environment for pathogen growth
