nerve tissue Flashcards
what are supporting cells?
nonconducting cells
what are neurons?
specialized cells to receive stimuli from other cells and conduct electrical impulses
what are the 3 types of neurons?
multipolar
bipolar
unipolar
what are the 4 types of glial cells/ supporting cells of the CNS?
Astrocytes
Oligodendrocytes
Microglia
Ependyma
how are astrocytes visualized?
immunochemistry w/ ab against GFAP
what are the 2 types of astrocytes?
protoplasmic
fibrous
what is special about the origin of microglia?
come from monocytes
what is the function of oligodendrocytes?
produce myelin in the CNS
what is the function of ependymal cells in the CNS?
have both cilia and microvilli (absorb and move)
choroid plexus they form secretes CSF
where do you find Schwann cells and what do they do?
PNS
produce myelin
what is the node of Ranvier?
junction between 2 schwann cell (has no myelin)
what are the myelin specific proteins in the CNS?
Proteolipid protein (PLP)
myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)
oligodendrocyte myelin glycoprotein (Omgp)
what are the 3 layers in the cerebellar cortex?
molecular cell layer
purkinje cell layer
granular cell layer
what 4 things make up the blood brain barrier?
Astrocyte end feet
Tight junctions
Basement membrane
Endothelial cells
