Neoplasia Flashcards
What are the 2 components of a tumor?
- Parenchyma
2. Supportive stroma: Reactive connective tissue and acellular components
What are the 3 tumor characteristics?
- Differentiation and anaplasia
- Local invasion
- Distant metastases
Define differentiation and anaplasia
Differentiation: The extent to which neoplastic cells resemble normal cells
Anaplasia: A lack of differentiation
Distinguish benign tumors from malignant tumors
Benign tumors are well differentiated. Malignant tumors range from well differentiated to undifferentiated.
What are the morphologic marks of anaplasia?
- Pleomorphism
- Abnormal nuclear morphology
- Abundant mitoses
- Loss of polarity
Discuss Metaplasia
Replacement of one type of cell with another. Almost always found in association with tissue damage and repair
Describe Dysplasia
- Loss in uniformity
- Loss of orientation
- Pleomorphism
- Hyperchromatic, Large nuclei
Discuss Local Invasion
Benign tumors expand locally and form a capsule consisting of CT around the tumor.
