Tumor Markers
Done to detect enzymes and hormones secreted by tumors. They do not affect other organs, they either stay in blood or get excreted through urine.
Carcino-embryonic antigen
Stool assay to check CA levels
Colon, pancrease, stomach, and breast
Prostate-specific antegen (PSA)
Blood assay to see if elevated to SUSPECT (not dx) prostate cancer
Beta-hcg
Trophoblastic tumors (choriocarcinoma)
CA-125
Ovarian surface epithelial malignancies
alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)
Hepatocellular carcinomas
Germ cell tumors of testes or ovary
Catecholamines and metabolites
Pheochromocytoma
Immunoglobulins
Multiple myeloma and other gammopathies
