Nature vs Nurture Flashcards
What does nature refer to?
The in-born, inherited factors gained genetically from parents
How do genes influence behavior?
Promoting brain growth in areas that respond to external stimuli and that organize aggressive behavior
Define genotype
The set of genes that are inherit from a set of biological parents
Define phenotype
The observable properties of the body and behavioral traits
What are hormones?
Chemical substances secreted into the bloodstream from various glands as a way for our body to react to certain situations
What do hormones do?
Have a role in initiating, mediating and regulating the process of growth, development, maturation, reproduction and biological ageing
What does nurture refer to?
Environmental factors influencing human development
What is an ‘enriched’ environment?
Where all basic needs are met including nutrition, education and love. Exposure to stimuli in the environment positively contributes to the development of the child
What is a ‘deprived’ environment?
Basic needs are lacking. Individuals are not exposed to stimuli that allows for normal growth and development
What is required for ‘typical’ development?
Requires genetic signals as well as environmental input, thus, nature and nurture are required together to full develop an individual
Daniels and Plomin (1985) findings
Both hereditary and environment play roles in shyness in children, highlighting how environmental and biological environments contribute to development
