Naloxone
Drug Class
An opioid antagonist that reverses the effects of opioids by competing with the same receptor sites.

IV / IO: 1-3 minutes
IM: 3-5 minutes

Indications
Respiratory depression in a suspected narcotic overdose.

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to Naloxone
Naloxone
Dose
Adult:
* IM- IV-IO
400 - 800mcg repeated every 2 mins (total max dose 10mg)
- IV / IO:
Dilute 400microg in 1mL with 9mL NaCl 0.9% to produce 40microg/1mL*
IN
1 spray (1.8mg) Nyoxoid into nostrol
Repeat at 2 mins in opposite nostril if no response.
Paediatric:
IM/IV/IO:
10 microg/kg, (total max dose 400 mcg), repeat every 2-3 minutes as required, titrated to clinical response.
If high suspicion of overdose, 100 microg/kg dose (Total max 2mg) may be given following a lack of response to initial dose.

One spray (1.8mg) of Nyxoid® into nostril.
Repeat after 2 minutes if no response

Side Effects
- Combativeness
- Vomiting
- Sweating
- Tachycardia
- Hypertension
- Acute withdrawal convulsions (chronic narcotic users)
- Pulmonary Oedema (rare)
