N Flashcards
Natural selection
Factors such as competition and predation affect the survival of a species. As a result, only those individuals adapted to survive have the greater chance to pass on their genes to the next generation.
Negative feedback
the mechanism used in homeostasis for maintaining near constant conditions in the body.
Nerve
A bundle of nerve cells (neurones) which pass from the central nervous system to a certain part of the body.
Neurone
A nerve cell.
Nitrification
Conversion of ammonium ions to nitrate ions by bacteria.
Nitrifying bacteria
Bacteria found in the soil that convert ammonium ions into nitrite ions and nitrite ions into nitrate ions.
Nitrogen-fixing bacteria
Bacteria found both in the soil and in the roots of legume plants that convert atmospheric nitrogen into nitrogen containing compounds such as amino acids
Nitrogen
An element needed for healthy plant growth, taken up by plant roots in the form of nitrate ions. Chemical fertilisers often supply nitrate ions.
Non-biodegradable
Materials that will not break down in the environment, e.g. most plastics.
Nucleus
The part of the cell which contains genetic info in the form of chromosomes. The nucleus controls the activities of the cell. Nuclei may be haploid or diploid.
Nutrition
Taking in of nutrients which are organic substance and mineral ions, containing raw materials or energy for growth and tissue repair, absorbing and assimilation them.
