Bacterium
A type of microorganism consisting of single cells. Each bacterial cell has cytoplasm surrounded by a cell membrane and cell wall, but has no nucleus.
Balanced diet
A diet that provides sufficient energy for a person’s needs and all the food nutrients in the correct proportions.
Bile
An alkaline fluid made in the liver and stored in the gall bladder. It is released into the small intestine through the bile duct to help with the digestion and absorption of fats
Binary fission
A type of asexual reproduction in which one cell divides into two. Bacteria reproduce by it.
Binomial system
A method for naming organisms in which each is given two names: a genus name and a trivial name, e.g. Homo sapiens for humans
Biodegradable
Something that can be broken down by biological processes. e.g. some plastics.
Biomass
The mass of living material in a particular area.
Biotechnology
the use of organisms to make useful products, such as foods and medicines, or to carry out useful services such as making wastes harmless.
Birth control
Prevention of a birth either by a contraception or abortion.
Bladder
A muscular sac that stores urine and passes it out through the urethra.
Blind spot
part of the retina where there are no receptors
Brain
the part of the central nervous system that coordinates most activities of the body.
Bronchiole
A small branch of a bronchus which ends in alveoli (air sacs)
Bronchus
One of the two tubes that branch off the trachea and pass into the lungs
