F Flashcards
Fats
Lipid molecules that consist of glycerol and three fatty acids. Fats are energy rich as they contain a high proportion of carbon and hydrogen atoms.
Fatty Acids
Molecules that combine with glycerol to form fats.
Fermentation
(1) anaerobic respiration in which glucose is converted into ethanol and carbon dioxide; (2) an industrial process in which microorganisms are used to make a useful product.
Fermenter
A large container in which fungi or bacteria are grown under sterile, controlled conditions.
Fertilisation
The fusion of the male and female sex cells. e.g. sperm and egg, to form a zygote (fertilised egg) that grows into a new individual.
Fertility drug
A drug that is used to increase the chances of a woman becoming pregnant.
Fetus
A stage during development of a mammal when all the major organs are recognisable.
Fibre
Indigestible plant material, mainly cellulose and lignin that provides bulk to assist the passage of food through the gut by peristalsis.
Fitness
The probability of an organism surviving and reproducing in the environment in which it is found.
Flaccid
A plant cell that has lost water by osmosis so that the cell contents no longer push outwards against the cell wall is described as flaccid.
Food chain
This shows the feeding relationships in a community beginning with a producer. Each organism is fed on by the next organism in the chain. Food chains show the flow of energy and nutrients.
Food web
A network of interconnected food chains showing the energy flow through an ecosystem.
