M Flashcards
Magnesium
The element needed for synthesis of chlorophyll. it is absorbed by the roots in the form of magnesium ions.
Malnutrition
The condition caused by eating an unbalanced diet. undernutrition occurs when a diet is deficient in one or more food types. overnutrition can lead to obesity and coronary heart disease.
Maltase
The enzyme that breaks down maltose to glucose.
Mechanical digestion
The breakdown of food into smaller pieces without chemical change to the food molecules.
Meiosis
A type of division of the nucleus to reduce the chromosome number by half. diploid nuclei give rise to haploid nuclei. also called a reduction division.
Memory cells
Lymphocytes produced during the first invasion of a pathogen or to a vaccine; these cells provide a fast immune response to infection.
Menstrual cycle
The sequence of events, that occurs in a woman, where the lining of the uterus thickens in order to receive a fertilised egg after ovulation. the cycle is controlled by hormones from the pituitary gland and the ovaries.
Menstruation
The breakdown of the soft lining of the uterus, discharging blood and cells through the vagina.
Metabolism
All the chemical reactions that take place inside a living organism.
Microorganism (microbe)
Microscopic organisms that take place inside a living organism.
Mineral salts
Inorganic nutrients such as iron and calcium that are needed for a balanced diet. Also required by plants to make compounds, such as amino acids.
Mitochondrion
cell structure where aerobic respiration occurs.
Mitosis
a type of division of the nucleus that gives rise to genetically identical cells in which the chromosome number is maintained by the exact duplication of chromosomes.
Monocotyledon
A type of flowering plant with an embryo with one cotyledon and parallel veins in its leaves.
Monohybrid inheritance
The inheritance of one gene with two or more alleles.
