Ileum
The part of the small intestine between the duodenum and the colon, the major function of which is the absorption of digested food.
Immune system
Tissues, cells and chemicals that act together to give a defence against pathogens.
Immunity
Protection against disease provided by the immune system, including lymphocytes and antibodies.
Implantation
The embedding of an embryo into the lining of the uterus.
Ingestion
The process of taking in food.
Inheritance
The transmission of genetic information from generation to generation.
Inherited disorders
Disorders caused by dominant or recessive alleles that are passed from one generation to the next.
Insulin
A hormone produced by the pancreas that stimulates the liver and muscles to store glucose as glycogen so causing a reduction in the concentration of glucose in the blood.
Intercostal muscles
Muscles between the ribs; external intercostal muscles contract during inspiration; internal intercostal muscles contract during expiration.
In vitro fertilisation (IVF)
Fertilisation occurs outside of the body by mixing sperm and eggs in a laboratory dish. The resulting embryo is placed in uterus.
Involuntary actions
an action that we do not have to think about.
Iris
The coloured part of the eye around the pupil. It alters the size of the pupil and so controls the amount of light entering the eye.
