Q

Is uncomplicated mycoplasma infection mild?

A

Used to be mild. However, today we can have minimally complicated mycoplasma (not a lot of co-infection), and still see severe clinical signs. This is may be due to doing a good job of elimination of infectious diseases in the industry as a whole. So end up with healthy pigs with non-specific immune stimulation. When Mycoplasma gets introduced, then those healthy, naive pigs, suffer more than a pig that has been exposed to more pathogens.

Q

Clinical signs

A
  • Around the airways - more in the parenchyma of the lungs vs inside the airways: intersitial or peribronchiolar inflammatory response
    • Chronic, non-productive cough in grow/finish pigs (because nothing to cough up - nothing in airway)
    • Cough induced by exercise
  • Minimal febrile response
  • Minimal depression and anorexia
  • Modest suppression of growth rates and feed efficiency
