Mycobacteria 24.11.23 Flashcards
What disease is caused by the mycobacteria ‘M.tuberculosis’
Tuberculosis
What disease is caused by the mycobacteria ‘M.leprae’
Leprosy
What disease is caused by the mycobacteria ‘M.avium’
Disseminated infection in AIDS, infections in patients with chronic lung disease
What disease is caused by the mycobacteria ‘M.kansasii’
Chronic lung infection
What disease is caused by the mycobacteria ‘M.marinum’
Fish tank granuloma
What disease is caused by the mycobacteria ‘M.ulcerans’
Buruli ulcer
Do mycobacteria take up gram stain?
No
What stain is used on mycobacteria?
Ziehl-Neelsen stain
What makes the inital ‘contact’ in primary tuberculosis?
Alveolar macrophages
What happens during latent tuberculosis?
Common-mediated immune response from T-cells, NO clinical disease
What happens in pulmonary tuberculosis?
Granulomas from around bacilli that have settled in apex (less blood supply in apex therefore less defending white blood cells)
If the granuloma forms or fails to form around the mycobacteria, what happens to the mycobacteria?
If it works, mycobacteria shut down metabolically to survive (dormancy). I fit fails, can result in formation of cavity full of live mycobacteria
What is the name of the tuberculosis skin test?
Mantoux
