Mutations and Organisms Flashcards
How do we classify mutations?
They can be changes in DNA, changes in mRNA, or changes in protein structure
Neutral Mutations
Protein unaffected
Hypomorphic Mutations
Decreased amount or activity of protein
Amorphic Mutations
Protein absent or nonfunctional
What Determines Phenotype?
Genotype + Environment
How are Genes Named?
Genes are named by mutant phenotype or protein
How are Alleles Named?
Alleles are named by discovery or phenotype
Somatic Mutations
If the cell continues to reproduce the result is a region of mutant cells
Germline Mutations
The parent is not affected but all of the cells in the offspring are affected
Inherited Mutations
Germline mutations become inherited mutations
Each generation is affected
Will a somatic mutation become an inherited mutation?
No, not in animals at least
Pseudogenes
Genes that mutated so long ago that everyone has the mutation
Mutations that happened many generations ago
Fairly common mutations but not everyone has them
A mutation that happened in a parent’s germline
The offspring will have the germline
The mutation happened in a somatic cell
Could cause cancer
