Human Chromosomes Flashcards
Autosomes
Two in males and females - most common
Sex Chromosome
Not two in males and females
Metacentric
The centromere is in the center of the chromosome
Acrocentric
The centromere is towards one end of the chromosome
Telocentric
The centromere is at one end of the chromosome
How are human autosomes named?
By length
Large = 1-5
Med = 6-15
Small = 16-22
Where is the location of centromeres on human chromosomes?
Metacentric and acrocentric
How to isolate chromosomes?
- Isolate blood
- Add WBC growth factor
- Add microtubule inhibitor
- Drop cells onto a slide
- Add Giemsa stain
- Take a photo and arrange the chromosomes into a standard pattern = karyogram
- Describe results
How to write a karyogram?
Total number of sex chromosomes, sex chromosomes, abnormalities
Chromosome Arms
P arm = small
Q arm = tail
Chromosome bands
Each chromosome has a metaphase map
Each distinguishable region is called a band
Regions contain bands
Bands contain sub-bands
Why are bands not named in order?
Better preparations show more bands
What is the actual system of naming bands?
Complex but flexible
Regions are numbered from centromere to each end
Chromosomes number changes
Autosome
+ = extra
- = missing
Sex chromosomes
list them
Chromosome Abnormalities
Deletion
Duplication
Inversion
Translocation
