mutation Flashcards
What are mutations?
Mutations are a change in genetic material, including DNA Nitrogen bases or the structure of a chromosome
What does gene mutations affect?
Gene mutations or DNA mutations affect the DNA Nitrogen base sequence.
What are the 2 types of gene mutation?
Point Mutation and Frameshift Mutation
What is Point Mutation?
Point mutation is where a Nitrogen base is Substituted affecting Only 1 amino acid
What is Frameshift Mutation?
Frameshift Mutation is where a Nitrogen base is added or deleted from the Sequence, which affects all amino acids that follow the mutation
What are human Diseases caused by?
Human diseases are caused by Genetic mutations
What are the 3 types of disease mutations?
the 3 types of disease mutations are Metabolic, transport and structural
What is Metabolic disease and what does it affect?
In Metabolic disease Enzymes are non functional affecting metabolism
Ex: diabetes, lactose intolerance
What is Transport disease and what does it affect?
In Transport disease proteins are missing or non functional affecting cellular transportation
Ex: Cystic Fibrosis
What is Structural disease and what does it affect?
In Structural disease the proteins are abnormal affecting growth and development
Ex: Leaky heart valves
