Musculoskeletal II: Muscles Flashcards
What is muscle? The three types?
- It is made up of cells that can shorten or contract
- Types:
- Skeletal
- Cardiac
- Smooth
Skeletal muscle cells (3)
- Very large
- Multinucleated
- Numerous myofibrils composed of actin & myosin
Mechanics of muscle contraction (2)
- Relaxed muscle fibers have actin & myosin filaments that slightly overlap.
- When stimulated to contract, cross bridges on myosin filaments slide back & forth.
Neuromuscular junction (2)
- Nerves and muscles separated by the synaptic space.
- Synaptic vesicles - sacs at the end of a nerve fiber; contain acetylcholine.
Initiation of muscle contraction (3)
- Nerve impulse reaches the end bulb of the motor nerve fiber.
- Acetylcholine is released into the synaptic space.
- This neurochemical impulse triggers the release of Ca+. Ca++ diffuses into the myofibrils & starts the contraction process.
Myopathy is a disease that affects the ___. Due to unique types of muscle, a myopathy usually affects ___ type of muscle.
Types of myopathy (4)
- Muscle
- One
Types:
- Inflammatory
- Immune mediated
- Congenital
- Metabolic
Inflammatory Myopathies
Etiology (2)
Clinical signs (3)
- Etiology
- Infections (esp bite wounds!)
- Trauma - Clinical signs
- Pain
- Swelling of muscle
- Fever
Inflammatory Myopathies
Diagnosis (3)
Treatment (2)
- Diagnosis
- Clinical signs
- Culture
- Serology: toxoplasmosis & clostridia - Treatment
- Tx specific disease
- NSAIDS
Polymyositis
What is it?
Clinical signs (4)
- It is
- Immune-mediated myopathy of skeletal muscles - Clinical signs
- Mult painful muscles (“eggshell” walking)
- Weakness, exercise intolerance
- Fever
- Muscle atrophy
Polymyositis
Diagnosis (2)
Treatment (1)
- Diagnosis
- Elevated creatinine kinase
- Muscle biopsy - Treatment
- Immune suppression: Prednisone; Azathioprine
Masticatory Myositis
Diagnosis (2)
Treatment (2)
- Diagnosis
- 2M antibody test
- Muscle biopsy - Treatment
- Immune suppression
- Nutritional support: Liquid diets; feeding tubes
Masticatory Myositis is an immune-mediated myositis confined to the ___ muscles of the face. Dogs are unable to open their ___. If untreated, muscle ___ and permanent “___ ___” may occur.
- Masticatory
- Mouths
- Scarring
- “Lock jaw”
Feline Polymyopathy
Etiology (4)
Treatment (3)
- Etiology
- Most common cause is chronic kidney disease
- Malnutrition
- Insulin therapy
- Hereditary - Treatment
- Aggressive potassium supplementation
- Tx underlying cause
- Will completely resolve w/appropriate Tx, but life-long supplement usually needed to prevent recurrence.
Feline Polymyopathy is profound muscle ___ and possible pain due to ___. Affects such as ___ and ___ may occur with this condition. Felines with this condition may have cervical ___.
- Weakness
- Hypokalemia (low potassium)
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Ventroflexion (cannot lift head)
