16
Q

What movement do the gastrocnemius and soleus produce?

A

plantarflexion of the foot

17
Q

What term is given to a pair of muscles that work together to produce movement

A

antagonistic pair

18
Q

What is an agonist?

A

the muscle that contracts to produce the movement

19
Q

What is an antagonist?

A

the muscle that relaxes to allow a movement to happen

20
Q

What is a fixator?

A

a muscle that steadies other bones and joints during a movement

21
Q

What is a synergist?

A

a muscle that assists the agonist with a movement by stabilising it

22
Q

When performing a bicep curl, identify the agonist and antagonist muscle

A
agonist = biceps
antagonist = triceps
23
Q

When flexing the knee, identify the agonist and antagonist

A
agonist = hamstrings
antagonist = quadriceps
24
Q

Identify the 3 types of muscle contraction

A

isometric
concentric
eccentric

25
Q

What is an isometric muscle contraction?

A

where a muscle contracts with no movement (e.g. a plank)

26
Q

What is a concentric muscle contraction?

A

when a muscle shortens during contraction

27
Q

What is an eccentric muscle contraction?

A

when a muscle lengthens as it contracts

28
Q

Name a disorder of the muscular system

A

Muscular Dystrophy

29
Q

Describe the effects of muscular dystrophy on the body

A
  • dystrophin (a protein) doesn’t form properly
  • muscle fbres break down, causing gradual weakening
  • weakening of respiratory muscles causes respiratory difficulties
  • weakening of cardiac muscle, causes heart problems
  • weakening of skeletal msucles makes it harder to walk
  • life expectancy is shortened
