Energy in the Body Flashcards
Describe the law of conservation of energy
energy can neither be created or destroyed, it merely changes its form
What are the differet ways energy can be transformed?
chemical heat sound electrical light
What is chemical energy?
energy in the chemical bonds that unite atoms and molecules
What is heat energy?
energy that results from movement
How can heat energy be transferred?
convection (through the air)
conduction (through solids)
radiation (though infrared waves
What is sound energy?
movement of energy through substances in longitudinal waves, produced when a force causes an object to vibrate
What is electrical energy?
movement of electricla charges around a circuit
What is light energy?
a form of electromagnetic radiation consisting of photons that travel in waves
It’s the only form of energy visible to the human eye
Why do we need energy in the body?
our muscles need it to move, to circulate blood, for breathing, making new cells, growth and repair, to transmit nerve impulses and build enzymes and hormones
What is energy metabolism
the process of generating energy (in the form of ATP) from phosphocreatine (PC) and glucose
Define the term catabolism
the breaking down of molecules into smaller units, releasing energy
Define the term anabolism
the building up of complex molecules using energy
Identify the 3 pathways our body can use to metabolise energy
ATP-PC system
Lactic acid system
Aerobic system
What is anaerobic respiration?
the creation of ATP to release energy without using oxygen
What is aerobic respiration
the creation of ATP to release energy with the use of oxygen
