Muscles of the Neck Flashcards
Platysma
orgin: Inferior border of mandible, skin and subcutaneous tissues of lower face
insertion: Fascia covering superior parts of Pectoralis Major and deltoid muscles
Innervation: Cervical Branch of facial Nerve (CN VII)
Draws corner of mouth inferior and widens it in expressions of sadness and fright, can also pull skin superiorly if teeth are clenched
Sternocleidomastoid Muscle
Orgin: Lateral surface of mastoid process of temporal Bone, and lateral half of Nuchal line
Insertion: Anterior surface of manubrium of sternum
and superior surface of medial third of clavicle
Inn: Spinal Accessory N (CN XI)
Tilts head to same side but turns face to contralateral side
can also extend neck and flex cervical vertebrae so chin can touch manubrium
Trapezius Muscle
insertion: Medial third of superior nuchal line, external occipital protruberance, nuchal ligament, spinous processes of C7 to T12
orgin: Lateral third of clavicle, acromion, and spine of scapula
Inn: Spinal Accessory Nerve (XI)
Elevates retracts and rotates scapula superiorly
can also depress scapula
Suprahyoid Muscles: Mylohyoid
Orgin: Mylohyoid line of mandible
Insertion: Mylohyoid raphe and body of hyoid
Inn: Nerve to Mylohyoid
Elevates the hyoid, floor of the mouth and tongue during swallowing and speaking
Suprahyoid Muscles: Geniohyoid Muscle
Orgin: Inferior Mental spine of mandible
Insertion: Body of Hyoid
Inn: C1 via the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII)
Pulls hyoid anterosuperiorly, shortens floor of the mouth and widens pharynx
Suprahyoid Muscles: Stylohyoid Muscle
Orgin: Syloid process of the temporal bone
Insertion: Body of hyoid
INN: stylohyoid branch of the facial Nerve (CN XII)
Elevates and retracts the hyoid, and elongates the floor of the mouth
Suprahyoid Muscles: Diagastric muscle Anterior Belly
Orgin: Diagastric fossa of mandible
Insertion: Intermediate tendon to body and greater horn of the hyoid
INN: Nerve to mylohyoid, a branch of inferior alveolar Nerve
elevates and steadies hyoid during swallowing and speaking
Suprahyoid Muscles: Diagastric muscle Posterior belly
orgin: Mastoid notch of the temporal bone
Insertion: Intermediate tendon to body and greater hyoid bone
INN: Digastric Branch of Facial Nerve (CN VII)
Elevate and steady the hyoid during swallowing and speaking
Infrahyoid Muscles: Sternohyoid Muscle
Orgin: Manubrium of sternum and medial end of clavicle
insertion: Body of hyoid
INN: C1-C3 by branch of ansa cervicalis
Depresses hyoid after elevation during swallowing
Infrahyoid Muscles: Omohyoid Muscle
Insertion: Superior border of scapula near suprascapular notch
orgin: inferior border of hyoid
INN: C1-C3 by a branch of ansa cervicalis
Depress, retract and steadies hyoid
Infrahyoid Muscles: Sternothyroid Muscle
Orgin: Posterior surface of manubrium of sternum
insertion: Oblique line of thyroid cartilage
Inn: C2-C3 by a branch of ansa cervicalis
Depresses hyoid and larynx
Infrahyoid Muscles: Thyrohyoid Muscle
orgin: Obliue line of thyroid cartilage
insertion: Inferior border of body and greater horn of hyoid
INN: C1 via hypoglossal nerve (CN XII)
Depress the hyoid and elevate the larynx
Anterior Scalene Muscle
Orgin: Transverse processes of C3-C6 vertebrae
insertion: 1st rib
Innervation: Cervical spinal nerves C4-C6
Flex head
Middle scalene
Orgin: Posterior tubercle of transverse processes C5-C7
insertion: Superior surface of 1st rib and posterior to groove for subclavian artery
INN: Anterior rami of cervical spinal nerves
flexes neck laterally and elevates the 1st rib during forced inspiration
Posterior Scalene
Orgin: Posterior tubercles of transverse processes of C5-C7 vertebrae
insertion: External border of 2nd rib
INN: Anterior rami of cervical spinal nerves C7 to C8
Flexes neck laterally and elevates 2nd rib during forced inspiration
