Branches of External Carotid Artery Flashcards
Ascending Pharyngeal artery
Usually first arises and only medial branch
and sends branches to the pharynx
prevertebral muscles
middle ear
and cranial meninges
Occipital Artery
Arises posteriorly from ECA
goes to posterior part of the scalp
Posterior auricular Artery
posterior branch, usually the last preterminal branch
ascends posteriorly between the external acoustic meatus and mastoid process and supplies the adjacent muscles, parotid gland, facial nerve, and structures in the temporal bone, auricle and posterior scalp
Superior thyroid artery:
Most inferior of the three anterior branches
goes to thyroid gland, infrahyoid muscles, inferior part of sternocleidomastoid
gives rise to the superior laryngeal artery which supplies the larynx
Lingual Artery
anterior aspect of the external carotid artery
supplies the genioglossus muscle, posterior tongue
gives rise to the deep lingual and sublingual arteries
Facial Artery
Arises anteriorly from the ECA
gives rise to the ascending palatine artery and tonsillary artery
supplies the submandibular gland and most muscles of the face
also gives rise to the submental A
Ending of the External Carotid Artery
breaks into the Maxillary and the superficial temporal Artery
