Muscles of Lower Limb: Hip and Thigh Flashcards
Iliopsoas
Muscle that moves the hip
–actually 2 muscles: iliac and psoas major
action: thigh and trunk flexion (bowing)
Origin: ilium and lumbar vertebrae
Insertion: femur
*note: actually easy to see in abdomen, difficult to locate on thigh
What are the 4 muscles of the gluteal region? What is the 1 band of CT/fascia of the gluteal region?
4 muscles: Gluteus maximus Gluteus medias Gluteus minimus Tensor fascia lata
Band of CT/Fascia:
Iliotibial Band
Gluteus Maximus
gluteal region
action: extension of thigh, lateral rotation of thigh
Origin: ilium and sacrum
Insertion: femur
Gluteus Medius and Gluteus Minimus
gluteal region
action: abduction of thigh, stabilization of trunk
Origin: ilium
Insertion: femur
Tensor Fascia Lata
gluteal region
action: flexes, abducts and medially rotates thigh; steadies iliotibial band
Origin: ilium
Insertion: femur
Iliotibial Band
gluteal region
tight band of CT/fascia
action: stabilizes thigh and trunk during walking/running
What muscles are included in the Anterior Compartment of the thigh?
Quadriceps femoris group
Sartorius
What muscles are included in the Quadriceps Femoris Group?
Rectus Femoris
Vastus Lateralis
Vastus Intermedius
Vastus Medialis
Rectus Femoris
anterior compartment of thigh; quadriceps femoris group
action: flex thigh, extend leg (helps you kick)
Origin: ilium
Insertion: tibia via patella
Vastus Lateralis, Vastus Intermedius (deep to rectus femoris), and Vastus Medialis
anterior compartment of thigh; quadriceps femoris group
action: all vastus muscles extend leg
Origin: femur
Insertion: tibia via patella
Sartorius
anterior compartment of thigh
actions: flex, abduct, and laterally rotates thigh and flexes leg (helps you cross your legs)
Origin: pubic
Insertion: tibia
What is the muscle group included in the Posterior Compartment of the thigh?
“Hamstrings” (3)
“Hamstrings” (3)
posterior compartment of thigh
Includes:
Biceps Femoris, Semitendinosus, Semimembranosus
action: extension of thigh, flexion of leg
Origin: ischium and femur
Insertion: tibia or fibula
What muscles are included in the Medial Compartment of the thigh?
Gracilis
Adductor Magnus
Adductor Longus
Gracilis
medial compartment of thigh
action: adducts thigh, flexes and medially rotates leg
Origin: pubis
Insertion: tibia
