Intro to Muscles Flashcards
What are the 3 types of muscles?
Skeletal, Cardiac, Smooth
Skeletal Muscle
pulls on bones of skeleton
Striated, voluntary
Cardiac Muscle
pushes blood through circulatory system
Striated, involuntary
Smooth Muscle
pushes fluids and solids along the digestive tract and regulates the diabetes of small arteries
NON-striated, involuntary
What are the 4 tissue properties of skeletal muscle?
- Contractibility
- -muscle cells can shorten - Excitability
- -very responsive - Extensibility
- -can increase in length - Elasticity
- -able to return to original length
What are the 5 functions of skeletal muscle?
- produce movement
- maintain posture
- support
- generate heat
- storage and movement of materials
Skeletal Muscle
Mostly skeletal muscle tissue, but also contain CT, nerves, and blood vessels
Subdivisions of Skeletal Muscle
Muscle is composed of multiple fascicles in which are composed of individual fibers
CT Membranes: Epimysium, Perimysium, Endomysium
Epimysium: surrounds entire “muscle,” separates muscle from surrounding tissues and organs
–most superficial
Perimysium: surrounds each fascicle, divides skeletal muscle into compartments
–in between epimysium and endomysium
Endomysium: surrounds muscle fibers w/in a fascicle
–most deep
Muscle Attachments: Tendons and Aponeurosis
Tendon: muscle to bone
Aponeurosis: flat sheet of tendon
Origins and Insertions
Muscles cross at least one joint. Locations where these muscles attach are called origins or insertions.
Origin: proximal attachment/bone fixed
Insertion: distal attachment/bone mobile
