Axial Musculature: Head and Neck Flashcards
Muscles of Facial Expression (4)
Orbicularis Oris
Orbicularis Oculi
Frontalis
Buccinator
Muscles of Mastication (4)
Temporalis
Masseter
Pterygoids (lateral and medial)
Muscles of the Tongue (1)
Genioglossus:
–action: protracts (protrudes) tongue
Origin: mandible
Insertion: posterior part of tongue
*Genio: think genesis…genesis=origin; tongue helps you form words, tongue helps origin of words (Thanks Keeley!!)
Muscles of the Neck (1)
Sternocleidomastoid (SCM)
- -actions:
- ->unilateral: flexes forehead laterally
- ->bilateral: flexes head/neck toward sternum
Origin: mastoid process
Insertion: medial end of clavicle and sternum
Extraocular Muscles
6 Muscles that move the eye:
- -superior oblique
- -inferior oblique
- -superior rectus
- -inferior rectus
- -lateral rectus
- -medial rectus
Aid in movement, adduction, abduction, etc.
Orbicularis Oris
muscle of facial expression
sphincter/circular
action: puckers/closes lips
Origin: skin around mouth
Insertion: within skin of face
Orbicularis Oculi
muscle of facial expression
sphincter/circular
action: closes eyelids
Origin: skin around eyes
Insertion: within skin of face
Frontalis
muscle of facial expression
action: raise eyebrows
Origin: skin on forehead
Insertion: within skin of face
Buccinator
muscle of facial expression
action: tightens the cheeks
Origin: mandible/maxilla
Insertion: within skin of face
Temporalis
muscle of mastication
action: elevates and retracts mandible (closes jaw)
Origin: lateral cranium
Insertion: coronoid process of mandible
Masseter
muscle of mastication
action: elevate mandible (close jaw)
- -according to wk 8 pre-class quiz, it also protracts the mandible
Origin: zygomatic arch
Insertion: mandible
Pterygoids (lateral and medial)
muscle of mastication
action: elevates and protracts mandible; side to side grinding
Origin: sphenoid
Insertion: mandible
Superior Oblique
muscle of eye
action: depresses and abducts eye
Origin: sphenoid
Insertion: eyeball
Inferior Oblique
muscle of eye
action: elevates and abducts eye
Origin: maxilla
Insertion: eyeball
Medial Rectus
muscle of eye
action: adducts eye
Origin: common tendinous ring
Insertion: eyeball
