What does efferent mean?

A

Motor neurons transmit signals from the brain and spinal cord to the muscles.

Q

What happens a motor neuron interacts with muscle fibre?

A

Acetylcholine (ACh) is released from the motor neuron, binding to receptors on the muscle cell membrane (sarcolemma).

Q

Reflex arcs are

A

Involuntary muscle responses to stimuli.
Involve sensory input, processing in the spinal cord, and motor output without direct involvement of the brain.

Q

How does muscle contraction work

A

Muscle contraction occurs as actin (thin filaments) slide past myosin (thick filaments), shortening the sarcomere.

Q

Explain the cross bridge cycle

A
  • Attachment: Myosin heads bind to actin forming cross-bridges.
  • Power Stroke: Myosin heads pivot, pulling actin filaments towards the center of the sarcomere.
  • Detachment: ATP binds to myosin heads causing them to release actin.
  • Reactivation: ATP is hydrolyzed, re-energizing the myosin heads
