Muscle control Flashcards
What is skeletal muscle control under
Voluntary control - somatic nervous system
What does efferent mean?
Motor neurons transmit signals from the brain and spinal cord to the muscles.
What happens a motor neuron interacts with muscle fibre?
Acetylcholine (ACh) is released from the motor neuron, binding to receptors on the muscle cell membrane (sarcolemma).
Reflex arcs are
Involuntary muscle responses to stimuli.
Involve sensory input, processing in the spinal cord, and motor output without direct involvement of the brain.
How does muscle contraction work
Muscle contraction occurs as actin (thin filaments) slide past myosin (thick filaments), shortening the sarcomere.
Explain the cross bridge cycle
- Attachment: Myosin heads bind to actin forming cross-bridges.
- Power Stroke: Myosin heads pivot, pulling actin filaments towards the center of the sarcomere.
- Detachment: ATP binds to myosin heads causing them to release actin.
- Reactivation: ATP is hydrolyzed, re-energizing the myosin heads
