Muscle Flashcards
Muscle Belly
is the entire muscle as a whole (e.g. biceps)
Fascicle
is a bundle of muscle fibers; it takes many fascicles combined, to make up the muscle belly
Muscle Fiber (Muscle Cell)
is a long fiber about the size of one strand of hair; it contracts to produce force
Myofibril
is a long fibril and smaller than a muscle fiber; there are hundreds of myofibrils inside one single muscle fiber
Sarcomere
is the smallest contractile unit of a myofibril; each sarcomere is linked together like a chain to make one myofibril
Myofilaments
are short protein filaments found within a sarcomere; there are two myofilaments called Actin and Myosin
Actin and Myosin
are the two myofilaments inside a sarcomere responsible for muscle contraction
