Bones Flashcards
Lower Limb (Extremity) Leg
Each leg is composed of 30 bones
Per Thigh, Leg and Foot
* 1 femur
* 1 patella
* 1 fibula
* 1 tibia
* 5 metatarsals
* 14 phalanges (per foot)
* 7 tarsals (calcaneus, talus, 3 cuneiforms, navicular, cuboid)
Pelvic Girdle
The pelvic girdle is the combination of 6 bones (2 ilium, 2 ischium and 2 pubic bones) and provides a strong and stable support for the lower extremities on which the weight of the body is carried.
- The ilium is generally referred to as the “hips” and is different from the hip joint
- The hip joint is the joining of the acetabulum(hip socket) and the femur
- The Anterior Superior Iliac Spine(ASIS) is the protrusion of bone on the front of the hip bone (ilium). It is an important
Vertebral Column
The vertebral column, along with the sternum and ribs, makes up the trunk of the skeleton.
The 26 bones of the vertebral column are arranged into five regions:
* 7 cervical
* 12 thoracic
* 5 lumbar
* 1 sacrum (5 fused bones)
* 1 coccyx (4 fused bones)
Thorax
The term thorax refers to the entire chest. The skeletal part of the thorax (a bony cage) consists of the sternum, costal cartilage, ribs, and the bodies of the thoracic vertebrae. The thoracic cage encloses and protects the organs in the thoracic and superior abdominal cavities. It also provides support for the bones of the shoulder girdle and upper limbs.
Pectoral (Shoulder) Girdle
The pectoral or shoulder girdle attaches the bones of the upper limbs to the axial skeleton. It consists of the clavicle and scapula only.
