Muscle Flashcards
Define muscle
Contractile tissue of the body that produces movement of the body parts and viscera
Define 3 types of muscular tissue
Skeletal → the muscles that are attached to the skeleton
Smooth → found in the viscera and blood vessels
Cardiac → the muscle of the heart
What is the histological appearance of skeletal muscle?
Striated, non-branching
What is histological appearance of the smooth muscle?
Non-striated, spindle-shaped
What is histological appearance of the cardiac muscle?
Striated, branching
What is called the origin?
The site of attachment at which the muscle starts
What is called the insertion?
The site of attachment at which the muscle ends
What happens when the muscle contracts?
Insertion is pulled towards the origin
Define belly
The fleshy part of he muscle
Define tendons
He ends that are attached to the bone
What are the 3 structures that the skeletal muscle is attached to the bone by?
Tendons → cylindrical, cord-like
Aponeuroses → flat sheet
Raphe → crossing of the tendons of the flat muscle

Smooth muscle
Cardiac muscle
Calf muscle, Gastrocnemius, Achilles tendon
