Joints Flashcards
Define joint
A site where two bones or more come together, regardless of any movement occurring at that site
What are the three types of joints?
Fibrous joints, cartilaginous joints, synovial joints
What is fibrous joints?
Articulating surfaces of the bones are joined by fibrous tissue, allowing no/very little movement
What is an example of the fibrous joints?
Sutures of the skull
What is cartilaginous joints?
Articulating surfaces of the bones are joined by a plate of cartilage, allowing no/very little movement
What is an example of cartilaginous joints?
Union between the epiphysis and the diaphysis → no movement
Joints between the vertebrae → little movement
What is synovial joints?
Articulating surface of the bones are lined by hyaline cartilage and are separated by a joint cavity
These joints are highly mobile
Give examples of synovial joints
Joints of the upper limb and the lower limb
Shoulder joint
Elbow joint
Wrist joint
Hip joint
Knee joint
Ankle joint
