what is the description and aetiology of mumps?
an acute viral disease due to swelling of the parotid salivary glands
what age group does this disease typically affect?
childhood/adolescence 5-15 years old
is this disease more severe in adults?
yes

what are the signs and symptoms of mumps
painful swelling in the side of the face under the ears. headaches, joint pain, fever, dysphagia
how is mumps diagnosed?
visual in GP, clinical examination of saliva for IgM
what is the pathogenesis of mumps?
spread via droplets, and is contagious before and after symptoms.
what complications may arise from mumps?
may affect other tissues, e.g joints, pancreas, myocardium, kidneys, may cause meningitis and in males orchitis infertility.
what is the treatment for mumps?
symptom relief, infection passes in 1-2 weeks
what’s the prognosis of mumps?
immunity is typically lifelong
