What is Gastritis?
Inflammation of the stomach
What is anorexia?
Chronic appetite loss
What is nausea?
Unpleasant feeling that may lead to emesis
What is emesis?
Vomitting
What is ingestion?
Food enters through mouth
What is mechanical digestion?
Large pieces of food broken down to smaller pieces - chewing in mouth, churning in stomach
What is chemical digestion?
Hydrolysis of food molecules - enzymes, acids
What are movements?
Peristalsis - wave-like muscular contractions move food through GI tract
What is adsorption?
Food molecules pass into blood and lymph in the small intestine
What is elimination?
Undigested food removed as faeces
What are the organs of the GI tract?
Mouth, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, anus
What are the accessory organs?
Salivary glands, livers, pancreas, gallbladder, tongue
What occurs in the mouth?
Saliva moistens food and begins to break down starch
What occurs in the oesophagus?
Peristalsis moves food to the stomach
