What causes HUS?

A

E. coli 0157 & Shigella - shigatoxin

A

High creatinine, high urea, proteinuria, haemolytic anaemia

A

Schistocytes, microspherocytes, thrombocytopenia, reactive neutrophilia

What does shiga toxin do?

A

damage intestinal epithelium and gain access to vascular system, bind to endothelial cells causing apoptosis, necrosis, induce inflammation and activate platelets. cause thrombotic microangiopathy - TMA causes macroangiopathic haemolytic anaemia sue to RBC fragmentation causing mechanical trauma

A

RBC & PLT transfusion & rehydration therapy

A

No they can worsen symptoms - used if risk of sepsis
