What does GERD/GORD stand for?
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
description and aetiology of GERD?
develops when the back flow of stomach contents causes troublesome symptoms due to the dysfunction of the lower oesophageal sphincter
what are the symptoms of GERD
heartburn, acid regurgitation
what are the causes and risk factors associated with GERD
Being overweight, pregnancy, gastroparesis, diseases of connective tissues (RA, scleroderma, lupus)
what is GERD exacerbated by
smoking, high fat foods, chocolate, coffee, alcohol, eating before bed, medications like aspirin
What are the treatments available for GERD
antacids which neutralise acid in the stomach and oesophagus. H2 blockers reduce acid by blocking acid secretion. Proton-Pump Inhibitors block protein needed to make stomach acid. Surgery available in severe cases. Lifestyle changes (diet, smoking etc)
what complications may arise from GERD
Oesophageal ulcer and stricture, Barrett’s oesophagus, lung problems due to inadvertent aspiration of stomach contents
