Q

What is the multi-store model?

A

A linear model based on research into coding, capacity and duration of different memory stores. It proposes 3 distinct, unitary stores and tries to explain how information moves between the different stores.

Q

What are the strengths of the multi store model?

A

• provides a good starting point for the explanation of the structure and process of the memory system.
• inspired more research on memory.
• studies (eg HM) support the view that STM and LTM are two separate stores.

Q

What are the limitations of the multi store model?

A

• low ecological validity
• oversimplified - research suggests STM and LTM aren’t single separate stores.
• research suggests it’s the type of rehearsal that’s important, not the amount.
