Coding Flashcards
What is coding?
In what form information is stored depends on the memory store. The process of converting information into different forms is ‘coding’.
How many sensory memory stores does the sensory register contain?
five, one for each sense.
Give three examples of sensory memory stores.
1.) touch = tactile memory
2.) sound = echoic memory
3.) visual = iconic memory
What were the four groups in Baddeley’s study?
- Group 1 = acoustically similar words
- Group 2 = acoustically dissimilar words
- Group 3 = semantically similar words
- Group 4 = semantically dissimilar words
Which group performed worse when immediately asked to recall words in Baddeley’s study?
participants performed worse with acoustically similar words (group 1).
How does Baddeley’s research suggest that STM is coded?
through sound/acoustically, because it is better when it can differentiate.
Which group performed worse when asked to recall words after 20 minutes in Baddeley’s study?
participants performed worse with semantically similar words (group 3).
How does Baddeley’s research suggest that LTM is coded?
through meaning/semantically, because it is better when it can differentiate.
What were the strengths of Baddeley’s research?
- controlled lab environment.
- establishes cause and effect.
- lower risk of demand characteristics.
- less/no order effects.
What were the weaknesses of Baddeley’s research?
- low ecological validity.
- participant variables.
- difficult and time consuming to find 4 groups of participants.
