MSK objective soft tissue assessment Flashcards
What are the symptoms for:
Muscle tear
Ligament tear
Tendon disorder
Muscle tear - pain, inflam
Ligament tear - instability, pain, inflam
Tendon disorder - overused condition
Explain how mechanotherapy works
Loading a tissue by exercise, exciting the cells, producing more tissue, improving tissue strength = low pain
What are two ways of assessing ligaments
Feeling the end feel
Seeing pain response
What are the soft tissue treatments?
Specific soft tissue mobilisations -stretch Deep transverse frictions Muscle lengthening Trigger point Exercises Accessory stretch
How do SSTMs work?
Stimulate cells and alter remodelling - cause scar fibres to align in direction of stretch = increased strength
What are deep transverse frictions and how do they work?
Apply force to a fibre causing numbing and then going deeper
Break down adhesions
Increase blood supply
Activate cells in area
Re-orientate fibres = increase strength
What are the contraindications of deep transverse frictions?
Open wounds Clotting disorders Skin infections Acute inflam Active growth plates Over foreign body Bursitis
What are the causes of soft tissue injuries?
OMADIE
Overuse - performing a task with frequency
Misuse - putting abnormal stress through a tissue
Abuse - excessive force through tissues
Disuse - deconditioning
Intrinsic factors - age, genetics
Extrinsic factors - environment, equipment
