What are the types of breathing problems?
SOBAR
SOBOE
Orthopnoea - when lying down
Paroxysmal nocturnal dysphnoea - at night
Hyperventilation - excessive ventilation of metabolic requirements
Tachypnoea - rapid breathing
How do you measure breathlessness?
Modified Borg dyspnoea scale
0 =nothing
5 = severe
10 = maximal SOB
What is wheeze and what can it be caused by?
Narrowing of airways particularly on expiration
Caused by either bronchi spasm, inflammation, foreign object or sputum
What can a cough be caused by?
Inflammation
Irritation
Habit
What is the apology of a cough?
Breath in Breath hold Glottis closure Increase in intrathoracic pressure Glottis opens Explosion of air up to 500mph = cough
What should you ask about sputum?
Colour Volume Viscosity Taste Smell
What do the different colours of saliva mean?
Clear and watery = normal saliva Clear grey/white = mucoid - pollution Yellow/green = infected Rusty red = post pneumonia White/pink and frothy = pulmonary oedema Frank blood = haemolytic
What could chest pain be from?
Surgery Inflammation of pleura Muscle pain Rib fracture Angina Pulmonary embolus
How do you measure exercise tolerance?
Borg scale of perceived exertion
6 = very very light
12 = somewhat hard
20= very very hard
What are the symptoms of dysfunction?
SOB Cough Sputum Wheeze Pain
