Movement Skills Flashcards
What is a skill?
The ability to do something well
What are Fundamental Movement Skills?
Skills that are the basis of all movements in sport.
What are sport-specific skills?
Are a range of fundamental movement skills used in a sequence that are specific to a sport.
How are movement skills categorised?
- movement precision (fine or gross)
- type of movement (discrete, serial or continuous)
- predictability of environment (open or closed)
What does classifying movements skills help do?
Classifying movement skills helps us understand the demands of the skill. Also helps coaches assess performance, plan skill development and provide feedback.
What is a closed skill?
A closed skill is a skill where the performer has the greatest control over the performance environment (weather, playing surface, timing and opposition)
What is an open skill?
An open skill is a skill that is performed in an open environment where the conditions are constantly changing and the performer has limited control over their environment.
What are open and closed skills classified depending on?
- stability of environemt (unstable or stable)
- timing of skill (internally or externally paced)
- inter-trial-variability (is the skills performed the same or different each time?)
What are gross motor skills?
Gross motor skills are skills that require the recruitment of large muscle groups and produce the most force but are less precise movements.
What are fine motor skills?
Fine motor skills are skills that involve the recruitment of smaller muscle groups and have the highest accuracy involving precision.
What is a discrete motor skill?
A discrete motor skill are skills that have an obvious beginning and end, are one distinct movement and have a short duration.
What is a serial motor skill
A serial motor skill is a combination of discrete motor skills performed in a sequence that are linked together and have a specific order.
What is a continuous motor skill?
A continuous motor skill is a skill that has no definitive beginning or end point, display repetitive movements, and are longer in duration.
What are individual constraints?
Individual constraints are those that are internal to the performer and can be categorised as being structural or functional.
What are structural individual constraints?
Structural individual constraints relate to the body structure e.g flexibility, body size
