Coaching Flashcards
What is the direct approach to instruction (direct coaching)?
The direct approach is an instructor-orientated approach to coahcing movement skills, where the learner is told what to do and how to do.
What are characteristics of direct coaching?
- breaking sports down into technical skill components
- explicit instructions about skill execution and tactical awareness
- highly structured drills and providing the bulk of feedback to the learner regarding their skill errors
- benefits learners in the cognitive stage of learning
- learner is a passive receiver of information
What are the advantages to direct coaching?
- learners are able to master technique
- closed stable environment minimises distractions
- individual feedback is easily provided by coach
- maximise practice and time efficient
What are the disadvantages of direct coaching?
- learners may find skills to be boring/repetitve and demotivating
- lack of tactical awareness (application of skill in a game scenario)
- higher risk of choking
- skills tend to break down under game pressure since not practiced in game like conditions
What is the constraints-based approach to instruction?
Is a leraner driven method that allows individuals to extend their tactical awareness through participation in short-sided modified games. Also known as guided discovery
What are characteristics of constraints-based coaching?
- constraints are changed (typically task) to reach a desired outcome
- instructions are suggested to prepare for game scenarios
- coaches require high levels of expertise and experience about the sport in order to manipulate the constraints effectively
- learner is active and problem-solving
What are the advantages of constraints-based coaching?
- motivating
- skills are relevant to games
- decreased chance of choking
- enables independent learning
What are the disadvantages to constraints-based coaching?
- takes longer to achieve desired results
- drillls might not suit all age groups
- requires coach experiences for game manipulation
- not suitable for cognitive learners
