Mass, Force and Inertia Flashcards
What is mass?
The quantity of the matter found within a particular body.
A ball with a small mass has less inertia and therefore is easier to move than a ball with a larger mass with more inertia
What is inertia?
The resistance of a body to a change in its state of motion.
Is solely dependent on mass (more mass, more inertia)
The greater (size) the object = the greater the inertia
The greater the inertia = the harder it is to change its state of motion.
What is a force?
A force is a push or pull acting on an object as a result of its interaction with another object
Forces can speed up, slow down, stop, or change direction
What are the different types of forces?
- Normal Force
- Applied Force
- Friction Force
- Drag Force
- Gravity Force
What is normal force?
The support force exerted by one stable object on another
What is applied force?
A force that is applied to an object by a person or another object
What is friction force?
The force exerted by a surface as it moves across another
What is drag force?
a frictional force exerted on a moving object through air or water (air or water resistance)
What is gravity force?
A force with which the earth attracts objects towards itself.
What is friction?
Friction occurs when two objects come into contact with each other and it opposes motion of the object(s)
