movement observations Flashcards
MOVEMENTS
Motion Orientation Variety Ease Modulation Effective Normal Timing Safe
M
Motion = initiates and moves voluntary, with good frequency
- pain, fear, neuro/sensory/motor impairment
+ hyperactivity, impulsivity, involuntary mvmt (ADHD)
O
Orientation = orients to task and environment, transitions well …focuses on postural control and balance
- delayed/inadequate orientation between body segments / to task / to gravity / to environment
(don’t align segments/slumping/hiting themselves when falling)
+ excessive/hypervigilance = using more balancing stratergies to stay balanced
V
Variety = shows mvmt variety, adaptability and ability to improve
- altered tone, sensory impairment, weakness
- due to persistent infant patterns, pathological patterns (BI), inactive/sedentary, pa./msk problems
+ = lack of control, involuntary mvmts - due to lack of coordination and impulsivity
E
ease = mvmts are easy/free/fluid and without restriction
- pa., stiffness (contracture or abnormal joint dvlp), fear, spacticity
+ poor control, weakness, low awareness
- Children with down syndrome have hypotonia = very flexible which makes it hard to get postural orientation correct
M - 2
modulation = effort/force and amplitude/range are well controlled
- ineffective, weak, poor control, unable to sustain
+ too much = rough, rigid, over-reactive, fearful
Deschene muscular atrophy: Not enough
muscle force to push from the ground so
uses upper limbs to get to feet
E - 2
Effective = mvmt is purposeful, accurate and achieves intended effect
- effect not achieved due to inadequate mvmt attemps
+ effect not achieved despite excessive mvmt attemps
N
Normal = mvmt skills ‘milestones’ is normal for age/condition
- later/lower quality than expected for age/conditions
- earlier/better quality than expected for age/conditions
T
timing = timeing of start, duration and ending is optimal
- too slow = slow reaction and mvmt time
Consider reaction, mvmt and coincident (bringing body parts together in correct timing) time
+ too fast = impulsivity, poor planning
S
Safe = mvmts protect and don’t cause injury
- unsafe = accidental injury/risky, poor control
* ADHD
+ too safe = fear, avoidance, low experience
* due to sensory processing, weak or lack of experience
