WHAT APPROACH DOES MOTOR DEVELOPMENT NOW TAKE?
Dynamic System Approach
WHAT DOES THE DYNAMIC SYSTEM APPROACH BELIEVE??
Process depends on experimenting, curiosity and learning
WHAT IS THE STEPPING REFLEX?
Coordinating pattern mimicking walking.
WHEN DOES THE STEPPING REFLEX STOP?
At 2 months. Rapid weight gain means the childs legs are heavier quicker than they are stronger.
WHAT DID THELEN RESEARCH AND FIND?
Research the stepping reflex. Adding weight to the childs ankle stopped the stepping reflex and if they were added to water where the water supported their weight, the stepping reflex came back.
REACHING:
All components (stable arm, arm control) need to assemble for a successful reach. Once a child gains ability to sit up, the reach is more stable.
LIBERTUS AND NEEDHAM 2010
Sticky mittens study. Children used them for 10 minutes for 2 weeks to help them reach and grasp for things. Grasp was increased and they reached a lot more in comparison to their peers.
WHAT HAPPENS AT 8 MONTHS?
Children are capable of self-locomotion, start crawling.
WHAT HAPPENS AT 13-14 MONTHS?
children independently start to walk.
DEPTH PERCEPTION:
Measured using the visual cliff and improves after crawling happens
